![]() Every page is grabbing, and every moment holds something of interest.and still, it isn't rushed and flows at a wonderfully, steady pace. The world is rich, well developed, and doesn't drag, in the least. It holds mages, dragons, warriors, a foreign planet, horses, kings, and so much more. This is one of the better written, fantasy tales I've read in awhile. The warrior pays Hest's foster mother money for him, and Hest finds himself as the squire to a man, who knows kings and is about to go to war. When a warrior from this lusher country visits the inn and demands Hest take special care of his horse, little does he realize that his life is about to change. Then, there's area in between, and that's where their food and wood comes from. ![]() He's heard stories about the other side of the planet, where the sun only shines and burns everything. Robin McKinley’s beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.” (via Amazon) Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, “Cannot a Beast be tamed?” When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast ![]() ![]() No new reader, however charitable, could open “Fifty Shades of Grey,” browse a few paragraphs, and reasonably conclude that the author was writing in her first language, or even her fourth. Over at the New Yorker today, Anthony Lane says: ![]() Let's get the obvious of the way: It's not because of the writing. Why do people love Fifty Shades of Grey so much? Since then, the now-titled Fifty Shades of Grey series, has sold over 100 million copies, making it one of the bestselling of all time. In 2012, Random House picked up the series. The violence builds as the day unfolds and becomes constant, vividly recounted, and sometimes unexpected, as characters that readers have come to know are killed or wounded. The novel interweaves the stories of young soldiers (two American infantrymen, two paratroopers from Canada, an African American medic, and a member of a British tank crew) and two young French girls.
